Modelling Polycrystalline Materials: An Overview of Three-Dimensional Grain-Scale Mechanical Models

2014

International audience; A survey of recent contributions on three-dimensional grain-scale mechanical modelling of polycrystalline materials is given in this work. The analysis of material micro-structures requires the generation of reliable micro-morphologies and affordable computational meshes as well as the description of the mechanical behavior of the elementary constituents and their interactions. The polycrystalline microstructure is characterized by the topology, morphology and crystallographic orientations of the individual grains and by the grain interfaces and microstructural defects, within the bulk grains and at the inter-granular interfaces. Their analysis has been until recentl…

Premolars restored with posts of different materials: fatigue analysis

2011

Previous works studied the effect of the material and the dimensions of the post on the biomechanical performance (fracture strength and stress distribution) of restored teeth, under static loads. The aim of this work was to study the effect of the post material (glass fibre and stainless steel) on restored teeth, which have the final crown, under dynamic conditions. The use of a biomechanical model, including a fatigue analysis from FEA, is presented as a powerful method to study the effect of the material of the intraradicular post. The inclusion of the fatigue analysis allows for a more realistic study that takes into account the dynamic nature of masticatory forces. At the same time, th…

A nonlinear biomechanical model for evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid shunt systems.

1994

In view of complications arising from physical properties of cerebrospinal fluid shunts, a biomechanical model of hydrocephalus was set up to study in vivo parameters that may influence their function. These include: intracranial pressure, compliance and pulses, intrathoracic, intra-abdominal, and subcutaneous pressures, and the effects of siphonage and repeated valve flushing. Each of these factors was studied separately upon shunt implantation in the model. Results of testing of a sample low-pressure valve with antisiphon device conformed with consumer information in regard to valve opening pressure and pressure flow measurements. No customer information, however, was supplied concerning …

Fractional multiphase hereditary materials: Mellin Transforms and Multi-Scale Fractances

2013

The rheological features of several complex organic natural tissues such as bones, muscles as well as of complex artificial polymers are well described by power-laws. Indeed, it is well-established that the time-dependence of the stress and the strain in relaxation/creep test may be well captured by power-laws with exponent β ∈ [0, 1]. In this context a generalization of linear springs and linear dashpots has been introduced in scientific literature in terms of a mechanical device dubbed spring-pot. Recently the authors introduced a mechanical analogue to spring-pot built upon a proper arrangements of springs and dashpots that results in Elasto-Viscous (EV) materials, as β ∈ [0, 1/2] and Vi…

Tectonique et architecture des bassins intracratoniques Paléozoïques : impact sur l’enregistrement sédimentaire et la géométrie des réservoirs associ…

2019

The Paleozoic Saharan platform including the peri-Hoggar Basins (i.e. Murzuq, Illizi, Mouydir, Ahnet, Reggane and Tim Mersoï basins) are defined as intracraonic basins. Their histories have been dominated by slow long-wavelength vertical motions leading to overall low subsidence rate (i.e ca. 10 m/Ma to 50 m/Ma) and accumulation of an extensive cover of platformal sediments (i.e. shallow deposits environments), rhythmed by pulsatile periods of increasing and decreasing rate probably triggered by regional geodynamic events. The vertical motions of the platform produced several arches also called domes, swells, highs, ridges (e.g. the Tihemboka, Amguid El Biod, Arak-Foum Belrem and Azzel Matt…

Mechanical models of amplitude and frequency modulation

2005

This paper presents some mechanical models for amplitude and frequency modulation. The equations governing both modulations are deduced alongside some necessary approximations. Computer simulations of the models are carried out by using available educational software. Amplitude modulation is achieved by using a system of two weakly coupled pendulums, whereas the frequency modulation is obtained by using a pendulum of variable length. Under suitable conditions (small oscillations, appropriate initial conditions, etc) both types of modulation result in significantly accurate and visualized simulations.

Estimation of the elastic parameters of human liver biomechanical models by means of medical images and evolutionary computation.

2013

This paper presents a method to computationally estimate the elastic parameters of two biomechanical models proposed for the human liver. The method is aimed at avoiding the invasive measurement of its mechanical response. The chosen models are a second order Mooney–Rivlin model and an Ogden model. A novel error function, the geometric similarity function (GSF), is formulated using similarity coefficients widely applied in the field of medical imaging (Jaccard coefficient and Hausdorff coefficient). This function is used to compare two 3D images. One of them corresponds to a reference deformation carried out over a finite element (FE) mesh of a human liver from a computer tomography image, …

Moisture effect on deformability of epoxy/montmorillonite nanocomposite

2010

In this article the moisture effect on deformability of epoxy/montmorillonite nanocomposite was investigated. The change of fracture character and drop of elastic characteristics due to moisture absorption was observed. The estimation of filler morphological peculiarities (platelet stack constitution) in composite and its effect on nanocomposite elastic properties was undertaken. It is shown that the higher number of filler platelet per stack consistently leads to the decrease of nanocomposite elastic properties. Nevertheless prediction by micromechanical model is rough for moistened nanocomposite because of resin structural changes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010

On the analysis of Catalan thin vaults

2010

This paper is concerned with the identification, modelling and analysis of thin layered vaults, typical in the Catalan constructions of the XIX century. These special structures, also known as bovedas tabicadas, are characterized by very low thickness with respect to the medium surface dimensions and by the presence of different superimposed layers of bricks tied with mortar, are studied in order to individuate a coherent mechanical model for describing the material behaviour, to recognize the structural response utilizing as comparison adequate experimental results, and to extend the obtained results for the analysis of new vaults or for the restoration design of existing vaults. Firstly, …
